County panel backs big spending cuts

EDWARDSVILLE - County officials all appeared equally unhappy Thursday after they left a meeting of a committee that voted 6-0 to cut the budget by 3.24 percent by Nov. 30, the end of the current fiscal year.
And, there will be more cuts to come, Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan told members of the Finance and Government Operations Committee.
"There will probably be additional cuts. I think government has to run lean and mean. This is the first time in my memory that we've had to make mid-year budget cuts," Dunstan said.
"Government as we've known it is gone," Madison County Treasurer Fred Bathon said.
